Ploiesti, Romania – Exhibition Ongoing

As everyone who checks out my little blog (all 8 or so of you) KNOW.. I have been in Ploiesti, Romania as part of IN3’s group show.. so basically I took off from work and blogging for about 10 days..

Was it worth it? The venue – The Museum of Art was absolutely beautiful inside and out.

The opening night ceremony was wonderful with art lovers from all over Europe stopping by.. I met and talked to a lot of people about my work – the whys? and the hows?

I even got a write up in the local art paper .. 1st time ever..It was sweet. You can find the article here <— CLICK

I may actuall do a solo show there in spring because the venue and the people were just so awesome..

St. Cyril’s Monastery – Kyiv, Ukraine

St. Cyril’s Monastery in Kyiv, Ukraine is actually now a museum and a small church is all that remains of the original sprawling monastery atop the hill close to Dorohozhychi metro stop.. It’s a nice walk through Babi Yar park..and through the forest..

The monastery was actually closed in the late 1700’s and transformed into a hospital and insane asylum.. It is now a part of the Sanctuary of St.Sophia’s and considered a place of historical value.. Much of the original structure was desmantled but the main church and belfry were preserved.

The inside of the church has lovely frescoes and paintings from the 12th century that have been well preserved.

To get to St. Cyril’s, you can take trolley bus #12 from Dorohozhychi metro and it has a stop at the entrance to the complex.. or as mentioned, it is a lovely, albeit long, walk from the metro station.

The basic entry fee is 20 uah for adults but be fore-warned, photographs are not allowed inside the church.. (Yes..I know.. I snuck a couple..lol)

Motsameta Monastery – Kutaisi, Georgia

Sitting on the side of a mountain a few kilometers from Kutaisi, is the Motsameta Monastery. It was built by King Bagrati in the 11th century on the site of an old

church that had been destroyed by Arabs in the 8th century. Two brothers, Konstantine and David, the lords of the region,were murdered for refusing to convert to Islam..Their bodies were then thrown into the valley below.

Their recovered remains are interred here.. and are considered sacred..The name Motsameta means “martyr”..

It’s a pretty place to visit..but be aware that most of the church is off-limits to foreigners, so other than the grounds and a few exteriors, there isn’t much to see.. It makes for a good side trip from the Gelati Monastery .. and the views from the parapets are awesome..

Gelati Monastery – Kutaisi, Georgia

I had the opportunity to visit this UNESCO World Heritage site last fall.. It is located just a short ride from Kutaisi, Georgia.

The site has been neglected for ages and, when I visited in November of last year, reconstruction was underway …

It is located about 10 km from the city. The easiest way to reach this wonderful example of ancient Georgian architecture is to negotiate a taxi.. There are buses, but they are infrequent and run on no set timetable..

When you visit Kutaisi, be sure to include this on your “must see” places to visit..

Shot for the Day – Batumi Rental Bikes

Bicycles.. what a wonderful way to explore a city.. especially when they have these pretty green baskets. The rental bikes in Batumi, Georgia all have these bright green baskets which make carrying your stuff from place to place alot easier..

Bikes are available from vendors along the beach and from the automated system BatumiVelo.. You can buy an automated card for the machines from the Tourist info centers.. The card is rechargeable with a minimum of 20 lari..

The bike paths are painted red and cover most of the city..but one of the prettiest is the 8km stretch along the beach to the Batumi Port..

Shot for the Day – A little Weird Art

Now I don’t generally believe in digital manipulation.. I use post processing as little as humanly possible.. I think a lot of people tend to overdo it..Only my opinion so please don’t take offense anyone..

I remember when HDR was new and exciting.. I experimented.. I overdid .. the infrared came along.. I experimented.. lately I have been experimenting with contour painting..

My first love is still panoramic shots.. followed by doors, windows… everyday stuff that I see while I explore this wonderful world.. But …

These are kind of fun.. just a new way of looking at things..

A few more of my favorite subject… I look for unique colors, weathering.. textures.. It seems like older buildings and structures often have the best doors to shoot.. Or maybe that’s just me..:)

I usually fill up an entire memory card with doors… and windows..

An endless variety … endless form ..

It makes you wonder..what goes on behind those doors..what is the life led.. what are the memories..the hopes.. the dreams

Taking photos at night can be challenging, but also, very rewarding.. especially when you get that starburst effect on the streetlights. It just takes patience and a good tripod..:) To avoid camera shake, use your camera’s timer or a remote trigger…
