Noteworthy in Chisinau, Moldova

While not a thriving tourist destination yet, there are a few places that are “must see” if you visit this city in Moldova..

The number one, and by far the most well kept, site is the Metropolitan Cathedral “Nativity of the Lord”..

Cathedra and Bell Tower

which is located, oddly enough, in the center of Cathedral Park… The original bell tower was demolished in the ’60’s but rebuilt in 1998..

At the main entrance to the the park sits the Arc de Triumf…

The Presidential Palace, towering over the center of the city, is a short walk away…

The main train station is considered by many to be one of the prettier buildings in town.. The guards told us we couldn’t take picture inside..not sure why but, you know how security guards can be..

Like I said before, not a bad place for a weekend get-a-way…

Parks and monuments in Moldova coming soon…

Just North of Tbilisi

About 20 km north of Tbilisi, hidden in a valley, is the town of Mtskheta ….

Mtskheta

The small town was once the seat of government for Georgia and, now, most of its monuments and cathedrals are part of the UNESCO world heritage sites.

The most famous (and hardest to get to) is the Dschwari (or Jvari) Monastery. It is located on a rocky mountain top overlooking the city below. The name is translated as Monastery of the Cross.

In the historical center of town there is another well-known cathedral…

Svetitskhoveli Cathedral

This cathedral is known as the burial place for Christ’s mantle, and is the main Georgian church and one of the most venerated places of worship in the country.

The Samtawro Church is best known as the burial place of the famous Georgian monk –Gabriel.

This interesting and old city (one of the oldest continuously populated cities in the world) is easily reached from Tbilisi by public transportation..  Buses run frequently and are very inexpensive..usually from 4 to 7 leira  each way.  Or you can hire a driver for the day. It will cost from 100-125 leira for the whole day, but is well worth because it makes it easy to get to the mountain top and the Dschwari Monastery..

St. Peter’s Basilica

551 steps…

From Bridge

St.Peter’s Basilica.. One of the highlights of any trip to Rome.. and if you make the climb, one of the best veiws of Rome that can be found anywhere.

Waiting in LineOf course, on the way to the entrance, before you enter the square, you have to deal with the hundreds of of people selling “fast pass” and “skip the line” tickets that range anywhere from 20 to 45 Euros.. The lines ARE usually pretty long but don’t fall for the 2 1/2 to 3 hr wait time they tell you..but be prepared for a 20 minute wait.  The line moves fast and it’s only for security.  The entrance to the actual cathedral is free..

25 Minutes

This photo was taken from the end of the line and 22 minutes later we were inside…like I said, it moves pretty fast..

Once you pass security, you have to buy a ticket to the Basilica..the church may be free but the climb up is not.. It will cost 5 Euros to climb all those steps..or 7 Euros to take the elevator to the first level..  Unless you are feeling like you want the whole experience, take the elevator. I have done it both ways and the first 200 steps are pretty boring..nothing to see..just a hall with steps.. a lot of steps..

Up the Stairs

and there are still plenty of steps to enjoy after the lift… My advice.. buy the elevator ticket. Even if you want to climb all the way up, which gives you bragging rights, you can always use the elevator to come back down…

The first level leads up to a walkway around the inside of the dome where you can look into the church below and see the beautiful inside murals on the walls and the dome above. The first time I was here, there was a wire cage that you could actually shoot through.. that has been replaced by plexiglass which was dirty and scratched and darn near impossible to get a shot.. sorry but it’s true.

1st Level Mural 1 Basilica Dome

Now the fun part begins.. for the next 100 or so steps… you have the squeeze by people coming down…yep..exit and entrance is the same for this part..

Up More Stairs

Eventually…you will make it to the top.. huffing and puffing … but excited ..

From Basilica Dome Piazza di San Pietro

There is no time limit on how long you can stay and gaze out over the city.. I am not sure if I stayed for 30 minutes because I was captivated by the views or just knew I had to walk back down…probably a little of both..but eventually …..

The second level, on the way down is a broad expanse of flat roof top.. you will find a restroom here, along with a clean water fountain, a small cafe and a gift shop..

and some pretty good views too…

Rooftop of Cathedral Square Curve Rooftop of Cathedral

There are also some perfect views of the Basilica itself..

Bottom of the Dome Standing Guard

The elevator to ground level is also here..

Then down, down, down….

The interior of the cathedral is a work of art… full of paintings and statues and ornate iron and stone work..

After Corridor of Statues Domed Ceiling 1 Entry Hall St. Peter's Gated On the Throne

Like I said.. one of the highlights of any trip to Rome..

At the exit is a booth where you can buy tickets to the Sistine Chapel and the Vatican Museum…both of which, we skipped this trip..

Now time for some pizza, gelato..and my feet are begging me to rest… Still a long walk exploring this afternoon..

HAPPY TRAVELS!

Return to Italy

St. Peter's 1st Look B&W

I love visiting Italy… The history… the architecture… the food… Everything about Italy just begs to be explored.

Piazza Maria after the Rain

This was my second trip to Italy, and like the first, it began in Rome … The home of the Coliseum, The Pantheon, Vatican City .. and countless statues and monuments paying tribute to the past of the glorious Roman Empire.

A quick word.. The public transportation system in Rome is hard to beat… so forget the expensive cabs heading to the center from the airport.. The Leonardo Express takes about a 1/2 hour non-stop to Roma Termini..and costs just 12 Euros..Buses are even cheaper but I like trains..

Anyway..we took the above mentioned train from the airport to the main train/bus staion – Roma Termini..

Roma Termini

I usually stay in the Mecenate Palace Hotel, which is a 5-8 minute walk from the station.. It’s a nice hotel, excellent staff and a wonderful rooftop terrace where you can look out over the city.. The view from the room, as always, was amazing..  The Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore sits right across the street..

St.Maria Again

                                                      View from our window

It’s a wonderful, if smaller, cathedral and the entry is free..

Arched Ceiling Kneeling in Prayer Santa Maria InteriorIt was a great way to start a trip.. especially since it was raining sporadically since we arrived..But with all the great cafes and museums, it was easy to find a place to stay dry..

Since we arrived late, we decided to just walk around and do some exploring, without worrying about “landmarks” and “touristy sites” ..  Rome is very walkable, despite being very large.. And there are always interesting subjects to shoot..It is a photographer’s dream city..

Afterwards, we decided to help ourselves to some gelato..and relax.. Tomorrow was going to be a long day…

Catedrala Sfantul loan Botezatorul – Ploeisti

Standing at the round-about formed by the intersections of Bulevardul Republicii ,Strada Carpati, and Strada Vasile Lupu is The “Catedrala Sfantul loan Botezatorul” dedicated to St. John “The Baptist”.

Although it was built recently, between the years 1923 and 1937, it is an impressive building with a central tower that reaches 60 meters in height.

It is easily reached, being in the center of town, by walking along any of the wide pedestrian paths, by bus or tram..

HAPPY TRAVELS!!

St. Cyril’s Monastery – Kyiv, Ukraine

St. Cyril’s Monastery in Kyiv, Ukraine is actually now a museum and a small church is all that remains of the original sprawling monastery atop the hill close to Dorohozhychi metro stop.. It’s a nice walk through Babi Yar park..and through the forest..

DSC_1377 DSC_1389

The monastery was actually closed in the late 1700’s and transformed into a hospital and insane asylum.. It is now a part of the Sanctuary of St.Sophia’s and considered a place of historical value..  Much of the original structure was desmantled but the main church and belfry were preserved.

DSC_1398

The inside of the church has lovely frescoes and paintings from the 12th century that have been well preserved.

DSC_1395 DSC_1393 DSC_1392 DSC_1397

To get to St. Cyril’s, you can take trolley bus #12 from Dorohozhychi metro and it has a stop at the entrance to the complex.. or as mentioned, it is a lovely, albeit long, walk from the metro station.

The basic entry fee is 20 uah for adults but be fore-warned, photographs are not allowed inside the church.. (Yes..I know.. I snuck a couple..lol)

Motsameta Monastery – Kutaisi, Georgia

Sitting on the side of a mountain a few kilometers from Kutaisi, is the Motsameta Monastery.  It was built by King Bagrati in the 11th century on the site of an old

church that had been destroyed by Arabs in the 8th century. Two brothers, Konstantine and David, the lords of the region, were murdered for refusing to convert to Islam..Their bodies were then thrown into the valley below.

DSC_0147

Their recovered remains are interred here.. and are considered sacred..The name Motsameta means “martyr”..

DSC_0122 DSC_0136It’s a pretty place to visit..but be aware that most of the church is off-limits to foreigners, so other than the grounds and a few exteriors, there isn’t much to see..  It makes for a good side trip from the Gelati Monastery .. and the views from the parapets are awesome..

Gelati Monastery – Kutaisi, Georgia

I had the opportunity to visit this UNESCO World Heritage site last fall.. It is located just a short ride from Kutaisi, Georgia.

DSC_0040

The site has been neglected for ages and, when I visited in November of last year, reconstruction was underway …

DSC_0011 DSC_0039 DSC_0069 DSC_0078

It is located about 10 km from the city. The easiest way to reach this wonderful example of ancient Georgian architecture is to negotiate a taxi.. There are buses, but they are infrequent and run on no set timetable..

When you visit Kutaisi, be sure to include this on your “must see” places to visit..

Shot of the Day – Kyiv, Feofaniya Park

Feofaniya Park

Following up yesterday’s post of St. Panteleimon’s Cathedral (Nunnery) , I thought a word or two about Feofaniya Park would be appropriate.  This rolling hills park with it’s wide bricked paths and multiple ponds reminded me of my home city parks in Denver, Colorado. While most parks in Kyiv seemed to be mainly uncontrolled forests with paths, Feofaniya is sculptured, trimmed and a botanical beauty, filled with flowers, trees and shrubs. In my mind, it is surpassed only by the M.M. Gryshko National Botanical Gardens.

It is definetly worth the metro ride to the Ipodrom stop and short (#768)  Marshutka ride. Entrance is free to the park and transportation will set you back an even 5 uah (less than $1.00 USD)
