Shot of the Day – Kyiv, Feofaniya Park

Feofaniya Park

Following up yesterday’s post of St. Panteleimon’s Cathedral (Nunnery) , I thought a word or two about Feofaniya Park would be appropriate.  This rolling hills park with it’s wide bricked paths and multiple ponds reminded me of my home city parks in Denver, Colorado. While most parks in Kyiv seemed to be mainly uncontrolled forests with paths, Feofaniya is sculptured, trimmed and a botanical beauty, filled with flowers, trees and shrubs. In my mind, it is surpassed only by the M.M. Gryshko National Botanical Gardens.

It is definetly worth the metro ride to the Ipodrom stop and short (#768)  Marshutka ride. Entrance is free to the park and transportation will set you back an even 5 uah (less than $1.00 USD)

It can be most easily reached by taking the Blue metro line to the Ipodrom stop and marshrutka #768 to the end of it’s run.. Then a short walk down hill to the park entrance.. Total cost – 5 uah for transportation …  park entrance is free.

The Sultan Ahmed Mosque (Commonly called the Blue Mosque) is one of the largest and most picturesque of the mosques in Istanbul, Turkey.  It was built in the 7 year period from 1609-1616 during the rule of Ahmed I.

There are visiting hours daily and while there is no entrance fee, donations are requested upon exiting. There is a strict dress code and rules are strictly enforced. Be respectful and enjoy the beauty and extraordinary reverence of this magnificent building.

Shot of the Day – Barcelona (Off Season)

Deserted Beach

There is something to be said for traveling in the “Off Season” …  If you don’t like huge crowds of people and elevated “tourist” prices … If you just want to relax and explore without competition.. Try traveling before the hordes arrive.. or after they leave..

This was the beach near our hotel in Barcelona..a few people, the water was a little chilly in mid March, but the weather was magnificient and there was almost noone in sight up and down the beach.

The same could be said for the city.  There were alot of people, Barcelona is a large metropolitan area, but not overly so.. walking tours were easier.. public transportation was less crowded and most prices were lower than expected..

So avoid the crowds and act like a local..

Shot of the Day – Hagia Sophia (Istanbul)

Sophia Hagia-Istanbul (1)

Since I am headed back to Turkey on Friday, I thought it appropriate to add a few landmarks of the wonderful city of Istanbul over the next few days..

The Hagia Sophia Is a wonderful museum set in the heart of the Sultanahmet district in central Istanbul.  It served as the center of the Christian world until the Ottomans conquered the city in 1453.. From that time until it’s dedication as a museum in 1935, it served as the Grand mosque for sultans and the crown jewel of the Muslim world.  It was named a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1985.

Shot of the Day – Paris (The Wall for Peace)

DSC_4779

The Wall for Peace — 54 feet long, 45 feet wide and 30 feet high — is bisected by a walkway that offers a perfect perspective that has attracted  tourists since 2000, when it was built for the city’s millennium celebration. It was orginally supposed to be a 3 month installation that has been standing for almost 14 years.

The word “peace” is inscribed in 32 languages and 12 alphabets on the glass and 20-foot-tall metal columns standing sentries on either side.

One of the horrid reminders of WWII, Auschwitz stands as a memorial of loss and human degradation. It is located about 40 minutes from Krakow, Poland and, together with its sister camp, Birkeneau, it forms the Auschwitz-Birkeneau Memorial and Museum.
