Yanukovich’s Palace – A Monument to Avarice

On Saturday, we took the 30 minute drive up to Mezhyhirya, where the ousted president of Ukraine, Victor Yanukovich, had built and maintained an opulent manor.

Main House

                                               Main House

The estate is over 350 acres and situated on the banks of the Kiev Reservoir, also known as the Kiev Sea.

The immense park-like grounds are entirely surrounded by a fence and criss-crossed with brick inlayed paths..

The grounds around the main house, yes, there are several houses for guests on the property, were immaculately manicured

and statuary.

There is a golf course, which we saw..

and a zoo..which we didn’t..

The buildings had been sealed so we weren’t allowed inside, unfortunately..

I am not Ukrainian, but I live and work in Kiev, and  looking at this place made me angry.. and sad.. A monument to corruption, greed and avarice built with contempt for the Ukrainian people.

I think some visitors felt the same as I..

Entry fee ( the signs call it a donation but it is an entry FEE ) is 20 uah.. there are bikes for rent, which I recommend because the area covers 7 km on paths. If you want to see what corruption can, and often does, build and you can overlook the fact that a common slug

                                      My Opinion of Yanukovich

(umm thug) from Eastern Ukraine stole billions of dollars to build it.. it’s worth the trip from Kiev..

According to the security people, they may re-open the buildings once a complete inventory is finished..

Shot(s) of the Day – My Favorite Subject

Commercially, I know it’s a waste of time but, like they say, doing what you like is never really a waste.. I love to photograph things… common, everyday things.. Things people might just walk by without even a glance..  To find beauty (which, of course, is in the eye of the beholder) and symmetry in the most common places.. the most common items..is my goal in life as a photographer..

Tourist Office

And doors are my favorite, with windows and various storefronts a close second and third..

Traektoria

Traektoria

Why doors?  A good question… Maybe because no matter where you go.. no matter what you travel to see.. there are always going to be doors..  So an endless supply of subject matter.  And the cities in Europe (and possibly elsewhere – I’ll tell you when I have seen EVERYWHERE) have an endless variety..  from stately and majestic .. to crumbled and abandoned..

Rust and Brick

Rust and Brick

For some reason, I prefer the crumbled, rusty, falling apart scenes..I think it’s texture and contrast more than anything else..

No Parking in Weeds

I have images like this for sale as framed prints.. and they get alot of views, so I know people like looking..almost as much as I like shooting..

Shot of the Day – Out and About in Kiev

Arch at Night

                                                      Arch at Night

The plaza around the “Friendship Arch” is not near as crowded these days.. due in part to what has been happening around the country for the past few months…Still, at night..lit up in rainbow colors, it is a pretty sight.

Andrew's Descent

                                                       Andrew’s Descent

With St. Andrew’s standing guard at the top of the hill, Andrew’s Descent winds down to the Podil district. The narrow cobblestone street is home to a host of vendors selling everything from paintings to antique uniforms..and every souvenir in between..

House of the Weeping Wi

                                 House of the Weeping Widow

Drains flowing into the eyes of face mounted at the top of the building, lets water drain down her face…hence the name.. When it rains..she weeps

Shot(s) of the Day – Windows

Contrast in French - Marseille

                                            Contrast in French – Marseille

One of my favorite things to shoot are windows.. contrasting colors, shutters, shapes and sizes, all make for wonderful compositions. I try to shoot in groups of three (or more) but sometimes, even a single windows can stand out..

Flowers on the Ledge

Produce - Ivano-Frankovsk

                                      Produce – Ivano-Frankovsk

Get out and explore .. I know that every city has it’s iconic landmarks that are a “must see” ..but every once in a while, you have to wander the side streets..the back alleys..You never know what is waiting around the next corner..

TriColor

                                                           TriColor

And it’s not always just a unique photo you may find.. One of the best cups of tea I had in Istanbul was in a little cafe, we found in an alley in the Galata district after getting lost.. It didn’t even have a name.. just one table against the wall with an ashtray and free wifi.. and an almost perfect cup of tea.. The elderly gentleman that brought the tea (for a mere 1 Lira) sat and talked while we sipped our tea.. Since I don’t speak any Turkish,  I have no idea what he was saying, but his friendliness and smile made me feel like we were old friends..  It was quite a treat, and not really uncommon..  respect, courtesy and a smile go along way when visiting a foreign country..

Take a chance.. pitch the “tourist map” for a day or 2 and just explore..

Shot of the Day – Krakow, Poland

Main Square

Town Hall Tower – Main Square, Krakow

Standing 70 meters tall, the stone and brick Town Hall Tower stands guard over the Cloth Hall in Krakow’s Main Market Square.  The tower is all that remains of Krakow’s Town Hall, which was demolished in 1820 to “open up” the square.  The observation deck at the top is open to visitors. I was told it offers awesome views of the city..Unfortunately, it was closed while I was there..

Shot of the Day – Kyiv, Ukraine

Old Stone BW

There are all kinds of things to shoot in the world.. Landmarks, landscapes, people, events.. But what makes me happiest, is just walking around looking for the extraordinary in the ordinary..

This building is in Kyiv, Ukraine.. not far from the Dnipro River.. Just an old brick building.. But just looking at it made me wonder. What went on behind those walls? What could this building tell us? How much of history has passed by these windows? And I am still curious …

By the way, as a bit of self promotion, which I don’t do very often, this print is available at Fine Art America , as are others.. Have a look around.. Prints make wonderful gifts!  Have to pay the bills somehow lol

Shot of the Day – House with Chimeras (Kyiv, Ukraine)

House of Chimera

Situated on Bankova Street, directly across from the Presidential Administration Building, is one of the most recognizable of Kyiv’s landmark buildings..The House with Chimeras.  It was designed and built in 1901-1902 by the architect Vladislav Gorodetsky.

He orginally intended to use the building as “upscale” apartments but financial problems caused him to lose the property as collateral on a defaulted loan.

Today, it is used as an official government building for meeting with official state visitors.

Shot of the Day – Kyiv

St NicholasSt Nicholas 1

St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Cathedral in Kiev, Ukraine is located on Chervonoarmiiska St just a short walk from the new stadium. It was designed in a gothic architecture style by Vladislav Gorodetsky (also responsible for the House of Chimeras) and E. Salya. Currently the National House of Organ and Chamber Music is also located here and performs organ concerts. It is well worth a visit for both the stunning beauty of the cathedral and concerts.
